La Paz, Baja California Sur, The Sea of Cortez

La Paz, Baja California Sur, The Sea of Cortez

Seven days in the sea

We spent 7 days in The Sea of Cortez with 6 other wonderful friends from the Santa Rosa Sailing Club.  We chartered a 4 cabin sistership to Baja Fog as Baja Fog had just made Puerto Vallarta where she sat to take a rest.  This trip was in September of 2016 right after the hurricane.  Things were green but very buggy.  They don't call them no-seeums for nothing!  We travelled to beautiful anchorages and swam in perfectly warm waters.  We kayaked the river between Isla Partida and Isla Espiritu Santo, dinghied through the mangroves on Isla San Jose and hiked the beaches of the islands.  This trip was very much like camping on a boat with one stop in San Everisto for a night on the beach at Lupe's and a swim back to the boat.  The Sea of Cortez is full of beautiful water and lots of adventure.

Puerto Vallarta, Banderas Bay and North

Puerto Vallarta, Banderas Bay and North

Seven days in banderas bay

We spent 7 days sailing around  Banderas Bay including Puerto Vallarta, Yelapa, Los Arcos, Las Caletas, Punta Mita and North to Chacala.   The whales were in true splendor as it was January and the Bay was filled with breaching, spouting and tail slapping whales everywhere you looked.   We decided to extend our two day trip next time to Chacala as it is truly a magical place.  Gorgeous sunsets over the Sea of Cortez and wonderful music and food under the palapas on the beach lined little bay.  Our last little jaunt was a trip to beautiful Yelapa were we walked "uphill, both ways" to the waterfall, had lunch at Fanny's on the beach and spent the night at anchor.  We also made a special "tourist trip" to Las Caletas to see Rhythm of the Nights, a spectacular experience in both dining and entertainment.

Baja Fog in the Miraflores Locks, Panama

Baja Fog in the Miraflores Locks, Panama

through the canal

Baja Fog transited the Panama Canal in late April 2016.  Much of the canal has not changed in many, many years (with the exception of the new Panamex section that  opened a couple months after we transited).  We entered into the first set of locks, three locks from Colon to Lake Gatun, in the evening arriving to anchor just outside the last lock into Lake Gatun. Continuing on through the famous Culebra Cut where so many lost their lives, Baja Fog finished off the two step Miraflores Locks and then finally entered the Pacific Ocean through the San Pedro Lock.   From there, Baja Fog continued on another 1,876 miles to Banderas Bay, Mexico where her home became Marina Riviera Nayarit in the little town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.
